Open Source Blockchain Project Cronos announced on X that it had successfully completed another key upgrade of the Cronos zkEVM mainnet. The upgrade is seen as a milestone in simplifying Web3 access and scaling zero-knowledge interoperability.
The Upgrade:
Cronos zkEVM is a next generation zero knowledge layer-2 focused on scalability, security and cost efficiency. It is essentially a platform, leveraging the vibrant Cronos ecosystem to enable innovation.
The latest upgrade sought to introduce Smart Account SSO and lay the foundation for a ZK Gateway.
This aligns with the Cronos roadmap of bringing mainstream users and developers into the zk ecosystem and preparing for future cross-chain infrastructure.
The Timeline:
The upgrade was announced on March 24 2025 and scheduled for March 26 2025 at 07:00 AM UTC. Downtime of 1-2 hours was expected.
Real time updates were provided via X.
Eventually, 4 hours from the initial notification that the upgrade was ongoing, a success notification was posted:
Why This Matters:
Smart Account SSO – This allows users to log in from their Google, Apple ID or even email. Without the hassle of seed phases or private key management, the feature improves access of Web3 to Web2 users.
ZK Gateway groundwork: The upgrade sets the stage for seamless interoperability between zk-chains, enabling faster and more scalable cross-chain applications in the future.
Leadership Transition: The upgrade was one of the first major actions undertaken under Cronos’ newest addition to the leadership team – Mikro Zhao, who is replacing Ken Timsit as Cronos Lead, Head of Product and Engineering.
Thus upgrade is a win for all as it puts Cronos on the path to a seamless, user-friendly, and interconnected blockchain ecosystem.
