Changpeng Zhao, founder of the massive cryptocurrency exchange Binance, received a lighter sentence than expected. After pleading guilty to anti-money laundering violations, he was sentenced to four months in federal prison on April 30th, 2024. This comes after a year of legal scrutiny for Binance, which also resulted in a hefty $4.3 billion fine. CZ’s cooperation with authorities and lack of personal involvement in the illegal activity likely played a role in the reduced sentence.
